Open windows during the Advent season!

The Sammlung Goetz is exhibiting part of its media art collection online.

On each of the four weekends before Christmas, the Sammlung Goetz is presenting a film from its media art collection on its website’s homepage.

With the presentation of Robin Rhode’s Color Chart (2004-2006), a dramatic battle between color and the all-powerful white canvas awaits viewers on the third weekend of Advent. In the film, a white-clad man holds a blank canvas in his hand and successfully defends himself against color-clad assailants who attack him using various weapons.

The South African artist, who lives in Berlin, realized the tale as a modest stop-motion animation film, in which he combines performance and dance with street art elements. The story also includes experiences and memories of Rhode’s childhood in South Africa. “My 'Color Chart' is about violence and revolt; the colors seem to struggle to leave a mark on the canvas,” the artist commented. His parents’ rear courtyard in Johannesburg served as the story’s backdrop. The cracks, smudges and worn areas on the surface tell their own story.

The ironic allegory of the living conditions of colored people in South Africa is on view on Saturday, 12 December 2020 and on Sunday, 13 December 2020 on our homepage and until the end of 2020 on our website at Sammlung Goetz Digital.
