Architecture and Art in Dialogue

For a decade now, the ARCHITECTURE AND ART format of the Sammlung Goetz, in cooperation with the art agency Filomele and guiding architects munich, has been inspiring visitors with unique insights into the fascinating world of architecture and art.

On the occasion of this anniversary, we look back on the beginnings that made this extraordinary format an integral part of the mediation programme of the Sammlung Goetz. At the same time, we invite you to celebrate 2025 with us: you can look forward to thematically new and reinterpreted tours that take up the highlights of recent years and add exciting new perspectives. Be inspired by our two-hour 'walkshops' - a mix of guided tour and interactive workshop - and experience the interplay of architecture and art from a whole new perspective. Join us for an anniversary year full of exciting retrospectives, fresh approaches and immersive art and architecture experiences!

To mark the anniversary, we are returning 10 years later to the place where ARCHITECTURE AND ART began. In our first tour, entitled 'From Private Collections to Public Houses', we take a look behind the scenes of Munich's renowned art institutions and enter into dialogue with their directors.

Munich has a long tradition of combining private commitment with public funding. It is a combination that not only produces art treasures, but also encourages the building of new art galleries and the remodelling of existing ones - it should be noted that many of the city's most impressive art galleries owe their existence to donations from private collectors.

One example is the Lenbachhaus, which was purchased by the city of Munich from Franz von Lenbach's widow in 1924 and became a world-class museum thanks to Gabriele Münter's generous donation of the world's largest collection of the Blaue Reiter works. Not far away, the Brandhorst Museum has been enriching the Kunstareal since 2009. With its understated design and the dynamic colours of its façade, the museum houses the private collection of Anette and Udo Brandhorst.

Most recently, in 2014, Ingvild Goetz helped shape Munich's cultural landscape with the donation of the Herzog & de Meuron-designed exhibition building of the Sammlung Goetz together with 375 media artworks.

On our opening tour we rediscover two of these iconic buildings - the Lenbachhaus and the Museum Brandhorst - and include the Sammlung Goetz, whose exhibition building is still closed for renovation, as a comparative institution in a creative dialogue to illuminate the unique combination of architecture and art at all three sites.

Architecture and Art in Dialogue is a cooperation of the Sammlung Goetz, FILOMELE and guiding architects munich.
