Architecture and Art in Dialogue

Cultural promotion is the financing or subsidisation of culture by a community and describes in a broader sense all measures that support cultural activities financially, organisationally or ideally.

This year, for the second time, the Sammlung Goetz is awarding the Media Art Prize to young artists working in the field of media art. The prize, endowed with 5,000 euros, is a co-operation with the Kunststiftung Ingvild und Stephan Goetz and the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. The award is intended to promote the creation of new works of media art and strengthen their public perception. We are taking this as an opportunity to visit the work Somnium by the artist Eunju Hong, who was awarded the 2024 Media Art Prize, in the AkademieGalerie on the underground mezzanine floor of the LMU University Munich.

Since 1989, students from the Academy of Fine Arts Munich have been realising exhibition projects in the AkademieGalerie that are specially designed for this space. They are supported by changing curators. The space is a window into the Academy and presents the entire spectrum of artistic positions represented at the Academy.

The tour then continues to the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and the office of the academy association (Akademieverein). Here, around 700 art students study in a building designed by Gottfried von Neureuther in 1886 and a spectacular new building by Coop Himmelb(l)au, which opened in 2005 and is located near the prominent Ludwigstraße, which Ludwig I commissioned at the beginning of the 19th century.

The Akademieverein was founded in 1983 on the initiative of professors at the academy together with like-minded supporters. Together, they pursue the goal of supporting the academy both ideally and financially. In an interview with Heike Kiko, architect and board member of the association, we discuss the importance of sponsoring organisations and find out more about the special projects of the academy and its classes.

Architecture and Art in Dialogue is a cooperation of the Sammlung Goetz, FILOMELE and guiding architects munich.
